With a very well disciplined match from Liverpool in the first leg, there is not much to be said about which of the two will be proceeding to the next round. Porto on the day didn’t have the legs to overpower their opponents even though they had home advantage.

The first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 has come to a close with many obvious outcomes and a few which have upset some bookmakers! With leg two approaching at a rapid pace what do bookmakers and statistics say about who will advance to the daunting round of 8.

Looking at teams past performances in the championship as well as their past few games outside of the championship it is possible to make a simple deduction of who are favorites to make it into the the round of 8.

Porto vs Liverpool (0:5)

With a very well disciplined match from Liverpool in the first leg, there is not much to be said about which of the two will be proceeding to the next round. Porto on the day didn’t have the legs to overpower their opponents even though they had home advantage.

On the day the Portuguese side did not seem to be able to hold possesion long enough to capitalize on their opportunities. Having only 44% of the possession, which one can’t say is the worst, they just seemed to be in an offside position one too many times. With the team having 6 corners, 5 more than their opponents, they were just unable to get the scoreboard ticking with a most of their attempts being off target.

However, the English side came with one thing in mind, victory. With the team holding possession and utilising every inch of the field they were able to put away their first in the 25th minute. After that they just seemed to slot goals in with ease. Seeing the English team perform at this level in this part of the tournament is very promising as long as they don’t commit lots of fouls like they did in the match as this could come back to haunt them.

With Porto going into the second leg of the stage being 0:5 down they will need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to progress to the next round. It might be out of their reach but they have come out on top in 4 of their last 5 matches. It will not be an easy game as they are playing away to a team that is at the top of their game in the Championship. Liverpool will however go in with a different approach to the first match and this could play in favor of the away team, it’s just the matter of “are Porto hungry enough?”
